Like a zombie, he completed his formalities and tried to fit into his new life in the prison. He still could not believe he will have to spend ten years in this place.
He would look at the sandy brown hill separated by a barbed wire fence from his prison window. He would wonder what lied beyond the hill?
“Anyone tried crossing that fence?” he would ask in hushed tone.
“An escapee will be a sitting duck in open desert.” answered a veteran, “it looks easy because they want us to do something foolish, so that system doesn’t have to maintain us any longer.”

That’s scary.
Everyone yearns for freedom. But, here planning an escape may be having to book a date with death…
Wish you a very happy new year!

Sad. As you wrote this, as I read this, how many heads might have signalled the same thoughts? An escape from the different forms of prisons. A curiosity to know what lies beyond their eyes can see…. Wishing the best for all. Happy new year!

Dear Abhijit,
It sounds like he’s better off serving his sentence. Perhaps he can get out early on good behavior.

True. Escape is not an option ever. In the US they shoot down an escaped prisoner if they can catch him. But many prisoners get impatient and want to get out. Thank you for reading.

A devious plan by the authorities, but a good one I have to admit.

Quite a diabolical plan – leave the metaphorical (and potentially literal) door open so you can wipe them out instead of having to feed them.

Keeping freedom so close really is sadistic on the part of whoever designed that prison haha. Great take on the prompt!

I think serving his time is the best option. Trying to cross the desert seems extreme. 🙂

True. I also think so. Tell that to inmates, stuck between the devil and deep sea. May be little hope is some hope in a hopeless situation. Thank you for reading.

Despair and hopelessness. But before I feel too sorry for the prisoner I would need to know why he is in prison. Maybe he’s exactly where he belongs.

Reminded me of ‘Shawshank Redemption’, though the protagonist was not guilty in this movie.
Good take on the prompt!

Hope he doesn’t do something silly. Deserts can be treacherous places. But then freedom is more valuable!

You never know what desperate people can do. Death can be ultimate freedom. Thank you for reading.
