Journey, Not Destination, Excites Me #GoingPlaces

This week Indispire prompts us to share our experience visiting places near our city / state. To be honest, visiting places do not excite me. It is the anticipation of journey, boarding the cab to reach station or airport, and getting ready to board a train / plane and final departure that excites me.

As a child, I would sit by a window seat of a train and watch the world pass by. As stations went by, I would look at the passengers waiting for their train/s on the platform and think proudly I am travelling in an express train. Those days, mostly steam engines pulled the trains. I would crane my neck, as much as possible through the window grills, and try to catch a glimpse of the engine belching smoke and chugging along. That would be my thrill of a journey. Once I reached destination, life would be same old routine and and same old story. Even today, I love to sit by the window and watch the platform receding, the locoshed, the township staying behind. Men, women and kids, going about their business staring at the train and wishing they could also leave their happiness and sorrow behind and move with the train.

One journey I would love to undertake is driving around India by car. With creation of golden quadrilateral and access to Google map and GPS, journey around India at a leisurely pace should be reasonably easy. There are so many things to see in this vast country that is India. The following is a list, not necessarily the only things, that I would like to see:

• Travel on the NOIDA expressway and see Delhi fade away.
• Watch cloud covered Arabian sea and rain lashing the city of Mumbai.
• Drive up the Konkon highway and watch Western Ghats getting drenched in monsoon fury.
• Drive through desert of Rajasthan on a moonlit night,
• Drive up the cold mountain desert that is ladakh.
• See Brahmaputra river in full fury.
• Experience rain in Cherrapunji and see the state of Meghalaya.
• Sit under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya.
• Sit by the river Ganges in Varanasi and soak up the ambience.

More than reaching a destination, I love the journey more. Journey gives me a sense of motion. Like Dharmaraja Yudhisthira’s final journey in the epic Mahabharata, I would love to move on and on without looking back.
