Journey, Not Destination, Excites Me #GoingPlaces

images

This week Indispire prompts us to share our experience visiting places near our city / state. To be honest, visiting places do not excite me. It is the anticipation of journey, boarding the cab to reach station or airport, and getting ready to board a train / plane and final departure that excites me.

As a child, I would sit by a window seat of a train and watch the world pass by. As stations went by, I would look at the passengers waiting for their train/s on the platform and think proudly I am travelling in an express train. Those days, mostly steam engines pulled the trains. I would crane my neck, as much as possible through the window grills, and try to catch a glimpse of the engine belching smoke and chugging along. That would be my thrill of a journey. Once I reached destination, life would be same old routine and and same old story. Even today, I love to sit by the window and watch the platform receding, the locoshed, the township staying behind. Men, women and kids, going about their business staring at the train and wishing they could also leave their happiness and sorrow behind and move with the train.

One journey I would love to undertake is driving around India by car. With creation of golden quadrilateral and access to Google map and GPS, journey around India at a leisurely pace should be reasonably easy. There are so many things to see in this vast country that is India. The following is a list, not necessarily the only things, that I would like to see:

  • Travel on the NOIDA expressway and see Delhi fade away.
  • Watch cloud covered Arabian sea and rain lashing the city of Mumbai.
  • Drive up the Konkon highway and watch Western Ghats getting drenched in monsoon fury.
  • Drive through desert of Rajasthan on a moonlit night,
  • Drive up the cold mountain desert that is ladakh.
  • See Brahmaputra river in full fury.
  • Experience rain in Cherrapunji and see the state of Meghalaya.
  • Sit under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya.
  • Sit by the river Ganges in Varanasi and soak up the ambience.

More than reaching a destination, I love the journey more. Journey gives me a sense of motion. Like Dharmaraja Yudhisthira’s final journey in the epic Mahabharata, I would love to move on and on without looking back.

Note : This post is written in response to Indispire prompt a Indiblogger. More posts may be found here.

  1. Beautiful 🙂 boarding a train & booking a cab excites me as well. Even life is a journey and it is a journey that matters. We should learn to enjoy it.
I agree on this point that India is a vast country that you don’t necessarily need to go to Switzerland for a good traveling experience.
I would like to add one more place here which is VRINDAVAN. The temples there give divine like peace.

  2. It is always about the journey. It is the journey that gives u experience, teaches you righteousness and makes u cautious of the mistakes. We have a plethora of things to learn from the journey and enjoy it while destination brings the life to a stand still. So glad i read this at bedtime.

  3. Train rides excite me too! My parents prefer to travel by night trains but not me. I like to sit on the window seat and enjoy the views and the greenery. I always plug in some music and draw something in my diary when I am travelling by the train. The view is one reason I prefer trains over flights.

Lovely list! I would also love to experience these things (Except the noida expressway one. That’s one thing I do everyday, going to my college in Noida. And it somehow is the opposite of calming. The journey back, now that I love :P)

    1. Thank you for reading and commenting. My mention of NOIDA expressway was to move along not to go to work but to move away and merge into bigger part of journey.

  5. Two-three years ago I wanted to go outside India.

But when I realize people outside India are willing to visit this country for many reasons, I instantly decided I will never go anywhere even if the opportunity comes to me directly.

One of the main reasons why people visit India is “Spirituality”.

Seriously India is a land of spirituality.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment. Travel for work keeps you busy and preoccupied in job related manner. Leisurely travel keeps your mind on travel. Glad you have traveled half of India. Look forward to your posts.

  7. Very well written article. I love the journey as much as the destinations, as long as the journey is planned. I get hassled if I’m not prepared or there are unexpected changes in my travel plan. But I do feel that it’s good to derive pleasures out of the small things rather than waiting for the big ones to happen!

    1. Thank you for reading and leaving a word of encouragement. Yes unorganized journey can be stressful. More so if one is travelling with small children and aging members. As a free spirited individual in a group, a little disorganization may be acceptable as long as there is no damage to people. Life is unpredictable anyway, however much we may try.

      1. Bicycle is great too. I hope you mean lightweight bikes as we see in Europe or US. Not the Avon or Hero cycle that we commonly use in India. Bicycling demands great fitness.

      2. I like what’s called a hybrid or city bike. It’s a cross between a road bike with thin tires for going fast and a fat tired bike for mountain biking. I ride with a medium size tire.
I have to be careful where I go with a thin tire, they easily become flat, and fat tires require a lot of energy and strength.
Like the three bears, medium is just right.

  8. I cannot agree more with you on your thought about journey matters(good or bad both) instead of destination. Often in the rush to reach the destination, we may not fully enjoy the scenes/scenaray on our way.

  9. I love people-watching from the train too. Trains journeys have a certain charm about them, even though you can be pretty frustrated when they run late for hours together. That’s a great list for traveling, sir. I’d love to go for a ride through Ladakh too and experience the rains in Cherrapunji, be amidst the hustle and bustle of Mumbai and enjoy the fantastic street food. The list goes on and on. 🙂

    1. Thank you for reading and sharing your comments. Yes train journey can be a hassle too. But keeping broader goal in mind, and on an e poring spirit, we may accept many difficulties. Yes street food is worth exploring too.

  10. I guess we all grew up train travel being an integral part of our journeys. Now, all that has changed. I remember how Rajdhani trains were considered superior with catering services and lesser travel time. Things have changed a lot over the last 2 decades. Air travel has become a norm these days.
