Hardly had there been a semblance of relief from COVID infection farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh, decided to lay siege around Delhi. Farmers were unhappy with recently enacted farm laws and wanted those repealed. Apart from dampening prospect of economic recovery, protest increased potential of ill health due to cold weather and COVID infection. Without going to merits and demerits of the farm laws and associated farmers protest, this is a fictional account of young Jassi joined the protest.

Kharif season was over. Paddy crop has been harvested. Jassi was setting post harvest stubble left to fire. He would prepare the cleared out field for the Rabi crop. Stubble burning was a ruse, Jassi was waiting to catch a glimplse of Preetpal Kaur. Ever since he had seen her in a village wedding, Preeto had caught Jassi’s attention. Every morning Preeto goes to village school with her friends cutting across Jassi’s field.

“Oye, you are here?” startled Jassi looked back to find his friend Rupi, “I am searching you everywhere; come, commander sahab has called all of us.”

“What is so urgent?” questioned Jassi with a tinge of impatience; Preeto hasnt shown up yet, “can’t you see I am busy.”

“Brother, do you know you can go to jail for burning stubble?”Rupi said, “soon government will cut our water and electricity connecton, unless you pay the due; so you better come now.”

“Going to jail for burning stubble? His father, grand father and others have burnt stubble for generations. No one went to jail. No one has paid for water and electricity either. After all, farmers of Punjab made India food sufficient. Now government is thinking of stopping our power and water?”

Disturbed Jassi had many questions; he followed Rupi quietly

Pradhan, Kanwaljit Sandhu, is a well to do person. He had served in the army and commanded a division. Enemies say, Kanwaljit was a havildar. Controversy aside, Pradhan himself liked to be addressed as commander Sandhu or Sandhu sahab. A well to do farmer with large landholding, Sandhu sahab lived in a modern house that stood apart from the other dwellings. Pradhan owned more than one expensive cars and a few tractors.  Kanwaljit was a farmer who got his farming done using hired labor. Pradhan for many terms now, commander Sandhu was known to be a helpful person who stood by villagers in the time of their need. He often helped villagers by funding them in their need. He also  was a wholesale purchaser of produce of farmers that is sold in the mandi. People with a habit of exaggeration would gossip that, commander used to make a lot of money by selling his stored grains in the open market at higher price.

“Friends, because we did not vote for him, Modi has decided to destroy us, farmers” commander Sandhu was addressing a gathering of farmers in his front lawn, “Our Mandis will close, corporates will till our land, and some of our produce will  be out of essential items list.”

“My brothers, situation is grave. Captain Amrinder Singh, chief minister, has rejected these black laws in state assembly. Ex chief minister and head of Shiromani Akali Dal, Badal sahab has broken alliance with the Modi government. Now it is our turn,” Sandhu sahab, looked at his audience to gauge their reaction, and continued his speech, “friends, we the followers of Guru Govind Singh sahab, we must fight to remove black laws; if we don’t act now, soon we farmers of Punjab have to go to other states in search of work;” Pradhan continued, “I suggest, we must go and cut Delhi from rest of India and force government to accept our demands.”

Next morning, Jassi along with Rupi hopped on one of several tractors and heading towards Delhi amid vigorous chanting of “Jo Bole So Nihal” by Pradhan, and that was responded by others saying “Sat Sri Akal,”. As they hit the higway, they saw  many other were also going towards Delhi. Jassi felt like a soldier in Maharaja Ranjit Singh ji’s army, going to bring honor of Punjab back. “Once I come back”, he thought, “I can walk upto Rajbir Kaur’s father and ask for his daughter’s hand”. Yes, Preeto was his favorite. He was sure, Preeto liked him too. He had seen it in her eyes.

“Wake up son, we have work to do ,” He must have dozed off thinking of Preeto, when he was woken up by a gentle nudge, “this is Singhu border.” Many tractor with attached trolleys were standing infront and behind their transport. Everyone from our village is around here. We have supply store, a kitchen, bathing and sanitation, laundry facility, a library, a clinic and cyber center among others. We have tents for the elderly. For younger lot like you, you have to sleep on the tractor trolley or under it. You are a hardy farmer’s son, you shall cope, won’t you? Now we need volunteers to feed more than a lac people three meals daily. Go join them. Jassi joined langar sewa dedicated to feeding all. Thus began Jassi’s protest march from his village to Singhu border.

The protest has been continuing for more than a month now, as neither protestors nor government showing any sign of backing down.

  1. Farmers are the backbone of our society. Their issues should be looked into. There should be some middle comprise between the government and the farmers

  2. Very interesting. You make it so easy and simple. Wish I could write like you. The farmers are NOT going to give up. The government doesn’t know who they are contending with this time. it can get really ugly. Sardars wont give up and it can only lead to more agitation. I just hope it all ends soon. Jo bole so nihal! Sat Sri Akal. Waheguru meher karo!

    1. It is a come situation indeed. Government cannot succumb to demand and repeal a law passed by parliament. At the same time, kisans are not going to give in either. But position taken is very maximalist. As you said let us pray for God to intervene and settle the matter. Thank you for reading.

  3. Hw beautifully you weave a story around the current situation. I have been hearing in the news about the farmers. Our country is very much dependent on farming and their interests have to be protected.

    1. Change brings uncertainties and fear of unknown. I might be wrong but I feel it is important to make farmers understand what exactly the impact it this bill is going to have on them..throw away all the middle man who are satisfying their own agenda.

      1. I agree farmers need to be convinced. More so when change is not happening. Unreasonable demands are difficult to be accepted. Let us hope for the best.

  4. This story you had written about the current situation on the farmers’ protest is amazing. My ex’s relatives in there, participating actively with his family. Almost every day I get to know about the losses, the pain they are going through, many things are there that is not shown by media but it is wosre there. Their condition is dreadful, I could visualize your story!

    1. In our country farmers are one of the hardest working community. they do a lot for all of us, and even help in growing economy of country. it is really sad that they often faced difficult situations like this. really liked your story. you had narrated it great conviction and perfect characterization.

  5. Abhijit ji I haven’t been following the news lately due to personal reasons but you bring out the essence quite well. In the scenario presented nobody wants to fight for just mere power. There is more worry, story and stress to each sides argument. Being a democracy its quite tough for decision makers too to ensure everything is just and not all the benefits are reaped by a mere few names. Praying and hoping for a resolve and satisfied public.

    1. Let us hope the issue is resolved. I think demands are extreme and cannot be met. But protestor would not settle for anything less. Thank you for reading.

  6. Your story is so simple, but actually the situation out there is bad. We are destroying our own backbone and expecting to climb the mountains. Unless farmers are cared for, we can’t progress as a nation. Let’s just hope and pray that their issues are resolved.

    1. There are farmers and there are farmers. Punjab farmers are not that bad financially. Besides, farmers in South and West demand access to market. There is a lot propaganda and misinformation and politics. Farmers got caught in the middle. That is what I wanted to show in the story. Thank you for reading.

  7. I have been following this news, as I find it so heart-wrenching to see such a protest happening around us. I just hope for a win-win situation here. Thank you for sharing your views in the form of this nice story.

    1. Thank you for reading. There cannot be win win situation if one sides demands everything. Let us hope better sense prevails.

  8. What a beautiful narration of the plot on the ongoing protest of farmers. India is known as an agricultural country across the globe . Farmers are the foundation of this nation. May this situation ends sooner. May the best midway solution comes out faster. It is high time now.

  9. I am glad to see bloggers and writers coming up with their opinions. More than a month and situations are getting worse. I hope this resolves soon. Either govt repeal the law or farmers settle down with some adjustments. The fight is tough from both sides. One side I am happy to see the Farmers’ grit and patience but losing some of the fathers and brothers in this agitation is also heart wrenching. Thanks for bringing up this matter in light.

    1. Thank you for reading. I agree that the issue should be resolved amicably and peacefully. The fact that farmers are demanding repeal or nothing, showing unwillingness to listen to Supreme Court is disconcerting. No government can accept such extortionist demand. Besides, only farmers in Punjab mostly are protesting that too when government is saying nothing will change. What about farmers in rest of India who want the law?

  10. This protest has become a very important event for the country. However, as rightly pointed out in the beginning iam really not sure if this is the right way to go about it given the pandemic situation and how easily it can spread. Obviously, being the open for long this weather will any way bring on cold/cough. I really hope that the government and the farmers reach a amicable solution soon.

Your form of presenting this hot topic through a simple story makes it easy for every one to relate to the current situation.

On a lighter note, iam confused about Jassi’s love interest – is it Preeto or Rajjo? 😉

  11. You have put up a very complicated issue in such simple terms. Hope the protest ends soon as it is extrememly difficult for the farmers also right now considering the weather, Whatever is the outcome hope it all turns out positive and good.

    1. Thank you for reading. This is just a story. Most likely completely devoid of reality. All of India is hoping for a peaceful and acceptable solution.

  17. Wow, Abhijit the story spun around the current farmer’s issue is too good to read. You seem to have penned it really well from the farmer’s perspective. I do hope the matters get solved. The Government and the farmers must take a middle ground and settle this issue. As a nation dependent on farmers, I do hope this gets resolved soon.

  18. I love the way you wove the story from a farmer’s point of view. Jai jawan, jai kisan may be a popular slogan, but both don’t get as much respect as they deserve. Particularly the farmers that are the backbone of the country. The government should see the issues from a farmer’s point of view instead of trying to please the corporates.

    1. Farmers are the roots of India and now they are panic because of the unacceptable law. Modiji need to do a face to face talk with the leaders of farmer.
Abhijit ji you penned down the current situation in an artistic way.

  19. Very beautifully addressed!
Farmers are the soul of our nation & we must stand for their rights. However, they need to understand that the bill is for their greater good & middle men should be out from the scene. While a few things should be agreed from their side. There has to be a middle ground consensus.
